“Does just what I’d hoped it would — not only does the womens sun visor keep the sun out of my eyes, but my hair out of my face when bending over working in the garden. “This is the best sun visor I have ever purchased including ones that were advertised as not producing headaches! It slides easily onto my sunglasses and stays perfectly in place. But, even though the Vizini is very lightweight, it would not work as well with super light frames as its weight may cause the glasses to slide down your nose a bit – I know I tried it with mine.

My husband discovered another use for the Vizini. His bicycle helmet doesn’t have a visor and any other kind of visor wouldn’t fit under the helmet. But, the Vizini works really well with his helmet. Now he’s sold on them, too!”

Vizini ladies sun visors are the solution to an annoying and dangerous problem.

Ladies sun visors, golf sun visors, women’s sun visors, men’s sun visors are important. Numerous institutes and clinics around the world have conducted conclusive and startling evidence concerning the damaging effects of sunlight on our eyes.  I wandered around on the Internet and was amazed at the concern about sun damage and the extensive research and findings on the subject.

After having developed pterygium in both eyes, I was now keen on learning more since I was spending a good deal of time in the sun on the soccer field and neighborhood swim team events.

One very informative site I found is the National Eye Institute where I learned that sun protection for your eyes from the sun is imperative.  The cells of our eye lens are never replaced and that damage accumulates over time. The eye’s cell damage is irreversible.

We all know how fashionable it was to have a warm, glowing tan. When I was young, getting a tan meant no pimples, dark skin, and sun-lightened hair. I actually looked forward to getting tan and would start as early in spring as I could. Little did I know, however, was the damage that I was causing to my eyes by not protecting them!  I never liked having anything on my head and never wore sunglasses until I was in my twenties.

I learned that the damage starts when you are young but the effects are not felt until you are in your adult years.   The phrase “Age-related” eye disorders is misleading.  According to the National Eye Institute, you don’t have to be a senior citizen to get cataracts, for instance.  Cataracts do not affect vision when they just start.  It is later that you realize that they are stealing your vision, little by little.

And what about the damage the sun’s UV rays cause to our skin?

Mayo Clinic’s web site discloses:
“Excessive sun exposure. Anyone who spends considerable time in the sun may develop skin cancer, especially if your skin isn’t protected by sunscreen or clothing. Tanning also puts you at risk. A tan is your skin’s injury response to excessive UV radiation.”  I think that is worth repeating, “A tan is your skin’s injury response to excessive UV radiation.”

And for our friends in the desert or at altitude, the danger is even more significant.
Sunny or high-altitude climates. People who live in sunny, warm climates are exposed to more sunlight than are people who live in colder climates. Living at higher elevations, where the sunlight is strongest, also exposes you to more radiation.´ (www.mayoclinic.com)

Evidence from the state of Colorado confirms this theory:
“Skin cancer is the most common form of cancer. Incidence rates for melanoma, the most serious and potentially deadly form of skin cancer, are significantly higher in Colorado than in the U.S. as a whole. The Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment reported that the melanoma incidence rate among Colorado men was 38 percent higher than the national rate, and for Colorado women, 46 percent higher. (Office of the Governor, State of Colorado).  ”Emedicinehealth.com is quite specific about the urgency to avoid exposure to the sun and the specific ways to accomplish it:

Sunscreen with adequate protection against both UVA and UVB rays. While sunscreen should be applied at home about a half hour before sun exposure, you’ll need to re–apply more when you arrive. Studies show that most people apply far too little sunscreen, and the SPF of any product is reduced when it’s applied too thinly. You’ll need to reapply sunscreen after swimming or if you perspire a great deal.

A watch of some type to recognize how long you’ve been in the sun. You also need to know when it’s time to avoid sun exposure – from 10 am to 2 pm, when the sun’s rays are most intense.

A hat with a wide brim. This is even more effective than sunscreen in shielding the sensitive skin on the face and scalp from damaging UV radiation.

BUT WHAT ABOUT THAT HAT?   A soccer coach looking like she had just emerged from Tara in “Gone with the Wind”?  Or the “LA Laker” fan baseball cap timer at the swim meets was just not for me.  How can it be I was STILL not willing to mess up my hair where I ended up having to wear one of those hats all the rest of the day? Or head home, shower and re-do my hair? Vanity (having curly hair AND hat-hair would make Steven King stop to take notes for his next book) and Time.

I sat down at my kitchen table with a stack of my husband’s baseball caps.  I started cutting here, trimming there, and adjusting this and that.  My poor husband was now going to be minus his wardrobe of baseball caps.  (I chose the ones that were the dirtiest—turns out these were his favorites.)  My perseverance and focus finally paid off.   After a lot of trial and error, Voila!  The Vizini sun visor was born.
